Project: End-to-end App
Scope: 100 Hours
Role: UX Designer
Tools: Figma, Maze, Whimscal

Project Background

Security guards traditionally rely on manual processes to document information, leading to inefficiencies, potential errors, and delayed response times. Recognizing this challenge, 5-Cinco aims to transform the security industry by providing a digital solution that not only enhances accuracy and speed but also introduces advanced features to meet the evolving needs of security professionals

Project Goal

In the field of security operations, efficiency and accuracy are essential. 5-Cinco emerges as a game-changer designed to streamline daily security guard tasks and address the challenges of outdated manual processes.

Process

Research

Goal

  • Understand the market and problem.
  • Identify constraints.
  • Validate product market fit.

The main goal is to create a functional tool that can automate all manual tasks and provide a secure backup for the daily operations of the security personnel responsible for maintaining order and safety in the city.

Methodologies

  • Competitive Analysis
  • Validate product market fit.

I used specific Methodologies to gain a comprehensive understanding of their daily activities, including their opinions (both positive and negative), and evaluated the contributions made by others to achieve this goal.

Considerations

  • Diverse age groups and social backgrounds.

It has been identified that training individuals may face specific obstacles. This field is managed by people of different ages, some of whom have been working for years without implementing any changes.

Competitive Analysis

  • Real-time access and fast registration are crucial for the system's success.
  • Rounds can be logged through specific points within the location to be covered.
  • Immediately communication with the city's first responders departments is essential to improve the efficiency of the product.
  • There is an opportunity to create a proposal that not only stores ID information but also verifies its authenticity.
  • Most Apps enable you to track the real-time location of the guard.

User Interviews

  • 2 Manager interviwed
  • 6 Guards interviwed
  • Google Meet Videocalls
  • All users agree that handwritten registration can lead to confusion due to the lack of legibility.
  • Finding information in physical books can be challenging and time-consuming, especially when searching for specific dates and names.
  • Users dislike having information stored in multiple places. They have to fill out more than one book per day as a result.
  • This process does not inspire confidence in workers since they are only covered for events that are documented in the books.

Define

Research Synthesis

User Persona

Juan Marquez with a wealth of experience in security management, represents the ideal user persona for 5-Cinco. The app caters to Alex's needs by providing a user-friendly platform that not only addresses the challenges of manual processes but also aligns with his goals of efficiency, accurate documentation, and effective communication in the dynamic field of security operations.

Ideate

Card Sorting

Understanding how security guards mentally organize and prioritize features, I ensure that the app aligns seamlessly with their daily tasks.

The user-centric design approach, informed by these insights, reinforces 5-Cinco commitment to providing a powerful and intuitive tool that enhances the effectiveness of security operations.

Feature Set

  • Having direct communication with important entities in the city is a top priority.
  • Real-time review of information should be possible.
  • It is helpful to keep track of the site review by counting rounds.
  • To speed up and streamline the registration process, we have reduced the number of registration steps required

Site Map

After assessing the necessary features for the MVP, I created a sitemap that prioritizes quick access to required information and data visualization for the guard.

User Flows

5-Cinco aims to ensure seamless integration into daily security guard tasks. From incident documentation to secure access, patrol rounds, and real-time communication, the app's intuitive design enhances efficiency, accuracy, and overall effectiveness in security operations.

Style Tile

A dark mode design has been chosen due to its benefits for daily screen reading and eye health.

Prototype

Sketching

I sketched low-fi screens of the main app flows after understanding its design goal, structure, and users flows. These screens help me visualize the app's key features and get feedback from designers and stakeholders.

Low-fidelity Wireframes

These wireframes serve as a visual representation of the main features of the app and help me communicate effectively the design goal, app structure, and user flows.

Flow 1: Starting a shift

Flow 2: Register an entry

Flow 3: Send an Alert

High-Fidelity Wireframes

After conducting an initial user test with the lo-fi wireframes, I implemented some changes and adopted a more realistic approach to the final prototype.

Testing

Usability Test

Usability testing was a crucial stage in the development of 5-Cinco. It provided me with valuable insights into how security guards interact with the app and helped me identify areas for improvement.

Methods

  • 3 Participants
  • 3 User flows
  • Participants were observed and provided feedback on their experiences, with a focus on ease of use, navigation, and overall satisfaction.

Findings

  • Intuitive Navigation: Positive comments on the placement of essential features like "Incident Documentation" and "Patrol Rounds."
  • Efficient Incident Documentation: Users appreciated that the app allowed them to capture details quickly and accurately without disruptions to their workflow.
  • Positive Feedback on QR Codes: Participants found it to be a valuable addition to their daily routines.
  • Fingerprint Login Security: it was well-received for its security benefits, ensuring that only authorized personnel could access sensitive information within the app.

Iterations

Usability testing was a crucial stage in the development of 5-Cinco. It provided me with valuable insights into how security guards interact with the app and helped me identify areas for improvement.

  • The buttons have been made smaller in size, resulting in a uniform design.
  • Notifications were added to the main screen in order to modify the navigation bar that required a direct access button to the reports.
  • The text has been updated to provide more precise indications for the buttons.

I have added a download button that makes it easier to share files quickly.

Relevant information has been added to the welcome screen.

  • I have added a map that provides real-time updates to track alerts as they occur.
  • Text is added next to the logo and enclosed in a button to make the call to action more precise.

Final Prototype

After making necessary edits, we refined the app to ensure every pixel was perfect before deploying it. As the design process is iterative, the app will continue to evolve and transform post-deployment. Here are some screenshots of the final product and the prototype link.

Conclusions

The usability test validates the positive impact of 5-Cinco on the daily tasks of security guards. By understanding user interactions, preferences, and areas for improvement, the app is poised to deliver an even more polished and user-friendly experience.

The insights gained from usability testing serve as a foundation for ongoing refinement, ensuring that
5-Cinco continues to meet and exceed the expectations of security professionals in their daily tasks.

Learnings

  • With this project, I learned that there are still modern processes that need the help of designers and technology teams to improve processes.
  • I learned that no matter how small and simple a task may seem, every design process requires a lot of attention to detail.
  • I also understood that working with people can be quite an adventure, but that it is the best way to really provide a solution to a problem.

Future Considerations

If I had more time to revisit the project, I would like to implement an additional feature were users can access job information and resources to develop their careers.
